HGTV - A 159 Year Old Prince Edward County House Gets a Modern Facelift

In the summer of 2015, photographer Jaime Kowal and her friend Anna Hardwick, an actor who recently appeared in the Oscar-winning Birdman, travelled to PEC for a relaxing girls’ weekend. One thing led to another and the pair decided — just for fun — to check out some local real estate. They stumbled upon a four-bedroom house in Picton built in 1859. The historic home was being operated as a bed and breakfast, but its poor shape (think crimson walls, shoddy flooring and an outdated kitchen) earned plenty of one-star reviews online. Regardless, Jaime and Anna saw potential. They bought the place and, over the course of a year, transformed the dilapidated interior into a stylish boutique accommodation worthy of a few more stars.

The Ferg is a Scandinavian-inspired, rustic chic 1850s heritage home located in the heart of Prince Edward County's wine country. It's named after the land's first owner, a young Loyalist soldier and entrepreneur named Arra Ferguson, who received the property from the Crown in 1816. It includes the main house, a one-bedroom suite, and a loft, which can be rented as a whole or individually. Kowal designed and owns the space with her lifelong friend Anna Hardwick, an actress whom Kowal's known since they were eight-years-old in drama school together.

Longtime friends Anna Hardwick and Jaime Kowal have been coming to Prince Edward County with their families since they were kids growing up in Ottawa. Hardwick, an actor, and Kowal, a photographer, both moved to Toronto 17 years ago. During a girls’ weekend in June 2015, while they were staying at the Drake Devonshire, they stumbled upon a quaint cottage from the 1850s that was up for sale—the former home of one of Picton’s founders. They’d already discussed partnering up for a business venture, and whipped up a plan over a bottle of bubbly on the beach. They put an offer in on the Monday and it was theirs soon after. “It was magical how it came together,” says Hardwick.
